Yogananda’s Vision for Community in Portland
For more than 30 years, the Ananda Portland Community has expressed the vision of Paramhansa Yogananda’s “world brotherhood colonies”—spiritual communities founded on simple living, high thinking, cooperation, service, and divine friendship.
In 2026, our community entered an unexpected new chapter as we transitioned away from residential community life and placed renewed emphasis on the Ananda Portland Temple & Teaching Center as the heart of our spiritual community and sangha.
We have embraced this opportunity to explore new ways of living Yogananda’s ideals together.
That inspiration gave birth to the Yogananda Community Fund and, in turn, to an ambitious renovation of our Temple—creating beautiful new spaces designed to bring our community together in new ways.
Re-Creating a Home for Community
Our first phase of Temple renovation has completely transformed three important areas of our property:
Shanti Garden — a beautiful outdoor sanctuary for meditation, fellowship, events, and connection with nature.
Master’s Kitchen — a welcoming community kitchen where meals can be prepared and shared in the spirit of seva and divine friendship.
Sangha Hall — a flexible gathering space for community meals, classes, celebrations, service projects, and fellowship.
These spaces are about much more than construction. They are about creating a spiritual home where people can come together—to meditate, learn, serve, share meals, celebrate, laugh, and deepen their friendships with one another and with God.
The Yogananda Community Fund
The Yogananda Community Fund (YCF) was established in 2025 to provide resources for the ongoing needs and future vision of Ananda Portland.
The Fund allows us to respond wisely to opportunities as they arise while keeping our eyes on the larger vision: a stable, vibrant spiritual community rooted in Yogananda’s ideals of cooperation, service, and Self-realization.
Through the generosity of our community and friends, the YCF has helped make our Temple renovation possible.

As of September 2026, we have raised $177,633 toward our $201,314 renovation goal, leaving $23,681 still needed to complete this campaign.
