Chakra is a Sanskrit word that literally means “wheel” or “circle.” In a deeper, spiritual sense, the word describes the whirlpools or vortices of energy located along the central axis of our bodies, in the astral or energy spine that underlies the physical backbone.
There are six nerve centers or chakras in the astral spine. An upward flow of energy through the chakras accompanies divine awakening, while a downward flow of energy signals attachment to matter and a darkening effect on one’s consciousness. PY
Yoga is not just about stretching – it is also about directing energy and increasing our awareness of the flow of energy in the spine.
The chakras are energy centers in our astral spine. Yoga can help us become more aware of our chakras, and help us increase the flow of energy to and through these great centers of energy. The chakras hold our karma and the key to spiritual freedom.
